3 Signs that You’re a “Growing Leader”

Jul 28, 2020

At Cresta Solutions, I primarily serve growing leaders at educational organizations, helping them get breakthrough, sustainable results on their projects.

“OK, that’s great and all,” you may be thinking, “but what do you mean by ‘growing leaders’?”

Leaders

As I discussed in an earlier blog post about values, anyone can be a leader.

Whether they have a formal title or not, true leaders:

  • Take initiative
  • Build community
  • Creatively solve problems
  • Believe in a greater purpose (especially leaders at educational organizations!)
  • Inspire others’ belief in that purpose

I tend to work with those who have had enough experience in their careers to know what is working at organizations and what isn’t — those who are determined to make things better.

Growing

When I say “growing leader,” it is a nod to Carol Dweck’s growth mindset. A growth mindset is the belief that talents and skills can be developed. Rather than having a fixed mindset, which suggests that talents and skills are natural gifts, those with a growth mindset are committed to learning, working, and getting feedback.

Author and entrepreneur Z. Christopher Mercer’s description of a growing professional aligns with a growth mindset, as someone “who is dedicated to personal growth and development over the course of his or her career.”

Interestingly, Mercer says “Growing professionals tend to stand out from the crowd. They do so because they focus on personal growth with persistency and with passion….The growing professional invested yesterday, is investing today, and will invest tomorrow to realize a compounding effect in success measures for these efforts.”

In this context, “growing” does not necessarily suggest someone who is young or underdeveloped. Rather, "growing" is a term that shows humility, curiosity, and determination.

Are You a “Growing Leader”?

Based on the above, how would you answer the following:

  1. Do you believe your leadership skills can be developed?
  2. Are you dedicated to learning for the sake of your growth?
  3. Do you feel compelled to learn to make an impact on a greater purpose?

Yup.

Yes!

ABSOLUTELY!
